[edit] Martial arts training
Dan Henderson started wrestling at the age of 5. He was quite successful, and made it to both the 1992 and 1996 USA Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling teams.
Dan started training in mixed martial arts in 1997 at the suggestion of his friend and fellow wrestler Randy Couture, who invited Dan to join Rico Chiapparelli Real American Wrestling team (RAW). Currently, Henderson trains with Team Quest, which includes fellow fighters Matt Lindland, Nate Quarry and Chris Leben from The Ultimate Fighter TV show, and included Randy Couture until Couture's retirement. Just one year after beginning to train MMA, Henderson entered and won the UFC 17 tournament in 1998, defeating Allen Goes and Carlos Newton. After that, Henderson left the UFC for greater financial opportunity and went to Japan, competing in Rings and Pride Fighting Championships. Until recently, there was no 185 pound division in Pride, and so Dan fought at 205 pounds and heavyweight for much of his career, where he competed against some of the best, including Wanderlei Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Ricardo Arona. When Pride began its Bushido shows, bringing in lower weight classes, Henderson fought in and won their first ever 185 pound grand prix, defeating Ryo Chonan and Akihiro Gono by knockout, and then defeating Murilo Bustamante by a close split decision in the finals. At Bushido 10, Henderson defeated Kasuo Misaki by unanimous decision after hurting Misaki with stikes on numerous occasions. Henderson then enter the second ever Pride 185 pound grand prix, where he shockingly lost a rematch, in a fairly close, but well deserved unanimous decision win for Misaki.
Dan Henderson cross-trains in Boxing, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Although he has great takedowns, Henderson most often uses his wrestling to prevent the takedown, using sprawl and brawl techniques.
Henderson most recently fought Vitor Belfort on October 21, 2006 in PRIDE 32: The Real Deal at 205 pounds, winning the fight by unanimous decision.
