The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius , American is an animated television series, is a spin-off of the Oscar-nominated computer-animated movie; Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, first officially aired on September 6, 2002. This is also the first computer-animated Nicktoon.
The television series was produced by O Entertainment for the Nickelodeon cable channel, and animated by DNA Productions using LightWave 3D software as was the movie. A television movie, and Kaboom">Win, Lose and Kaboom, formerly named You Bet Your Life Form, aired on Nickelodeon in early-July 2004. A second television movie, The League of Villains, aired on Nickelodeon in mid-June 2005. In 2004, head writer Steven Banks was nominated for a Writer's Guild Award for the episode Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion. The first Jimmy Neutron mini-episodes aired before the Jimmy Neutron movie and can be seen only on Nicktoons Network, the movie web site, and on later versions of the DVD release of the original movie. The series officially ended on July 21, 2006 but one new episode aired on November 17, 2006 and the final two aired November 25, 2006.
The series is about a child genius and inventor named Jimmy Neutron in the fictional town of Retroville, who gets in and out of trouble by inventing far-out gadgets. Jimmy's main catchphrases are "Gotta Blast!", "Brain Blast!", or simply the most overused phrases, "I've Got It!" or "That's It!", which he says after coming up with the ultimate idea to solve the problem. Jimmy typically has a "Brain Blast" once an episode, usually at his climax of the story when all other ideas have failed, and it is accompanied by a display of his ideas floating within the inner workings of his brain.

[edit] Setting
No one knows the exact location of Retroville, other than the fact that it is located somewhere in the United States. In many episodes, characters often take off or land in a hoverdrone somewhere on the U.S. east or west coast. In "Lights, Camera, Danger", a lot of people misunderstood Jimmy after Quentin Smithee said that the movie was going to be shot in Retroville. Some thought Jimmy said "My screenplay takes place in London, not Texas." when what he said was "My screenplay takes place in London, the Atlantic Ocean, a mythical land in Texas, Retroville doesn't look like any of those." Interestingly though, in one episode, when Jimmy took off in the hoverdrone, a map showing his progress did show his starting point as being in the vicinity of Central Texas. One strong clue that they live in Texas is the TX that can be seen on Goddard's licence plate in the original movie.
There is also evidence in early episodes that suggests the setting is outside of Texas. In the first episode, "When Pants Attack," Cindy comments that Jimmy has a head the size of Texas. Carl tells her to knock it off because his uncle lives there. Had the setting been in Texas, Carl would have said "Hey, we live in Texas!" Also in The N Men, Carl, Cindy, Libby, and Sheen were taken to the Mojave Desert which is in California, and when the jets flew out of Retroville with Jimmy Hulk holding on to one, they ended up there. They couldn't have gotten from Texas to California that fast. But it is a fictional cartoon.
[edit] Trivia
- The Episode Journey to the Center of Carl is based on the plots of the movie and books Fantastic Voyage, where people shrink to microscopic size to gain something rather important in someone.
- Jimmy's house address number is 3210. This refers to 3-2-1-0-Liftoff!! in many episodes.
- In the episode "The Junkman Cometh", When Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen arrive on the moon there is an obilisk.
- In Sheen's Brain, where Jimmy supersizes Sheen's brain, when Jimmy looks to see how high Sheen's IQ will go, it shows that his IQ is only 32.
- In one episode, a princess calls herself the last member of the Tzu (pronounced "sue") dynasty, "but my friends call me Peggy." Sheen said "pretty pretty pretty Peggy Tzu," as a reference to the Buddy Holly song, Peggy Sue. Later, she refers to her brother as "a boy named Tzu". This is a reference to the Johnny Cash song, A boy named Sue.
- Jimmy Neutron has a high IQ level of somewhere in between 210 and 214. In a commercial for the Jimmy/Timmy Power Hour 3: The Jerkinators, his I.Q. is likely to be 278, although, in real life it is obvious that his I.Q. would be much lower, as many of his explanations, inventions, equations, etc. are really only half-correct, very simple mathematics, or complete nonsense.
- Jimmy's father, Hugh, is named after director/actor Hugh Beaumont (of "Leave it to Beaver" fame), as Jimmy's father's full name is Hubert "Hugh" Beaumont Neutron.
- Sheen is possibly the only character in the series with no eyebrows and no chin. He makes a reference to this in "Beach Party Mummy"'; Libby says she is related to Cleopatra; then Sheen says, "I'm related to the guy who invented baseball!". Then he says, "Did I say baseball? I meant the guy who invented spray-on eyebrows."
- Carolyn Lawrence, the voice actress for Cindy Vortex, is also the voice of Sandy Cheeks in Spongebob SquarePants. Both Cindy and Sandy practice Martial Arts. Also note the name similarity.
- The tentative title for the show was Johnny Quasar, but it sounded too much like Johnny Quest. (According to article on Cindy Vortex she was to have been named "Sally Proton".)
- In the episode Lights! Camera! Danger!, Jimmy Neutron pretends to forget Carl's name and calls him Rob. This is a reference to Rob Paulsen, the voice actor for Carl.
- The original concept, contrary to popular belief, was not derived from Cartoon Network's Dexter's Laboratory, but rather a Polish cartoon that aired for a short time during the early '80s.
- Nick and Libby were originally meant to be related.
- Carl and Sheen have spoken of eating each other on two occasions.
- One of Jimmy's inventions, the Time Booth, is a reference to the TARDIS, the main vehicle in the long-running series Doctor Who.
- Another one of Jimmy's inventions, seen in and Kaboom">Win, Lose and Kaboom, may be a reference to the Stargate from the film and tv sci-fi series Stargate.
- In the episode Men at Work they parody the famous line from Good Burger, "Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?".
- In My Big Fat Spy Wedding, when everyone is singing a Twonkie is seen dancing to the music, not turning into a monster as they did in Attack of the Twonkies.
- My Big Fat Spy Wedding is a reference to the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
- The robot Jimmy creates in Birth of A Salesman is named the Willy Loman 3000, the names of the robot and the episode itself are references to Death of a Salesman.
- All of the main characters have changed appearances from the movie to the TV series. In the series, Jimmy wears jeans and white shoes as opposed to shorts and brown shoes in the movie. Carl is mostly unchanged except for his suspenders being removed. Cindy meanwhile, was changed the most, from her hair (two pig tails in the movie; one ponytail in the series) to her outfit (pink shirt and shoes with black pants in the movie; green/grey striped tank top, brown khaki capris, and white shoes in the series). Libby was originally unchanged, but in the second season she has a different hairstyle, a pink and purple striped shirt and jeans compared to her blue dress from the movie and season 1. Even Nick has a new appearance from a leather jacket to his normal suede. Contrary to popular belief, Sheen has changed. The ends of his sleeves were darker in the movie than in the series.
- Hugh Neutron's role in the episode Return of the Nanobots is similar to the role of Henry Bemis in The Twilight Zone episode, Time Enough at Last. Hugh believes he is the last person on earth and has all the pie he could ever want, and Henry was the last person on earth and had all the books he wanted. In both episodes, something happens to destroy what they both had.
- Ever since the TV Movie Attack of the Twonkies, Sheen's Twonkie, along with the two other Twonkies it gave birth to, have made several cameo appearances.
- In the episode, Jimmy For President Carl is confused as for whom he should vote (this is the scene where the candidates walk through the neighborhood and give away buttons), and he shouts, "Stop the world, I want to get off!", which is reference to an old button slogan from the 1960s and 70s.
- Carl's mom now has a deeper, raspier voice compared to her more feminine-sounding voice in the movie.
- The recurring villain Tee is an obvious parody of Mr. T. He sounds like him and says the classic "fool" line a lot too. Almost as obviously, Travoltron is supposed to be a parody of John Travolta, and comments are sometimes made about his masculinity.
- The episode A Beautiful Mine is a reference to the film A Beautiful Mind. Also in this episode, there is a scene where the kids try to outrun the space aliens by manuvering through an asteroid field. This is similar to the scene in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, when Obi-Wan Kenobi tries to escape Jango Fett by flying through an asteroid field, or possibly Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back where Han Solo is flying the Millennium Falcon trying to escape from the Empire.
- Jimmy's mother occasionally calls him by his full name, James Isaac Neutron, a parody of Isaac Newton. She usually does this whenever Jimmy misbehaves or has done something really outrageous.
- Monkeys seem to be a recurring theme.
- The episode Out, Darn Spotlight!, could be considered the turning point of Jimmy and Cindy's relationship. Even though no "J/C Moments" happen in this episode, romantic bits and pieces between Nick Dean and Betty Quinlan are hinted. These were both Jimmy and Cindy's former crushes, implying that Betty and Nick were no longer interested in Jimmy and Cindy.
- In the episode I Dream of Jimmy, Jimmy went into Carl's nightmare. In order to escape, he had to kiss Cindy. If you look at the expression on Cindy's face after the kiss, it was smiling. This implies that Carl might have a suspicion they were in love.
- In the episode The Phantom of Retroland, Nick tells the kids that the phantom got in the theme park several years ago, yet in the movie, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Retroland is just opening. This might be just a way of saying it was a long time ago or Retroland is actually reopening.
- The song Go Jimmy Jimmy, originally from the movie is the only song (besides the original theme) heard in the series (one episode, Attack of the Pants).
- Sheen's last name is Estevez referred to the actor Charlie Sheen and his brother Emilio Estevez.
- In The Mighty Wheezers, Carl is shown taking off his glasses because of his new health, but both his parents continue to keep their glasses on for the entire episode.
- Retroville appears to be in Texas as hinted in The Evil Beneath and Operation: Jet Fusion. The theory is still vauge though, because in the episode "When Pants Attack", Carl says his uncle's from Texas, suggesting they live outside of the state.
- In the episode Men At Work, when the McSpanky's restaurant is chasing the boys, Carl says, "I knew that restaurants that let you have it your way was just a dream!". This is an obvious reference to Burger King fast-food restaurants, as their slogan is 'Have it Your Way'.
- Jimmy Neutron and Timmy Turner have met each other in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour having first started a very weak acquaintanceship, then a strong rivalry, and finally forming a fairly stable friendship. At the end of the final power hour, it is implied that Jimmy and Timmy think it best to remain in their own universes.
- In the episode Stranded, it is revealed that no one knew that Cindy knew Jimmy's name. However, she has called him Jimmy several times before then, including in the movie.
- Jimmy's dog's name "Goddard" is a reference to scientist Robert Goddard and Mark Goddard, the actor who played Major Don West on Lost In Space.
- There are two references to Buddy Holly. In the episode The Great Egg Heist, Sheen becomes interested in a Japanese girl who calls herself 'Peggy' Tzu. (prononced Sue), Sheen says, "Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, Peggy Sue," Which are lyric's in Buddy Holly's song, Peggy Sue. Another is in Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion near the end Jet says," Maybe you'll star in your own movie someday." Jimmy replies,"That'll Be The Day," which is a song by Buddy Holly.
- In the episode The Junkman Cometh, when they are in the pyramids, Carl says, "For now, I know why the caged bird sings.", an obvious refernce to Maya Angelou's book "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings".
- In the episode League of Villains, the character Granny Taters is actually from the episode "The Happy Show Show," which premiered weeks after The League of Villains. This was also the case with the baby Eddie.
- If you look closely at Jimmy's wall, you can see a poster that says "Pi in the Sky", which is referring to the game programming company named Pie in the Sky.
- The title for the episode "Ultra Sheen" is typed in the video game company Sega's signature font style and colors.
- In the episode "A Beautiful Mine" before they discover the meteorite the URL on Cindy's computer is amandaplease.com from The Amanda Show.
- In the episode Battle of the Band, the theme Jimmy's band plays closely resembles the song 'Warning' by Green Day
- In the episode "Sorry, Wrong Era", Sheen, Carl, and Jimmy ride down a dinosaur's back, saying "Yabba Dabba Doo!". This is a reference to The Flintstones.
- In "Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3: The Jerkinators", Timmy says, "Hey, Debi.". This is a reference to Jimmy's voice actor, Debi Derryberry.
- In "The Junkman Cometh", while Jimmy, Sheen and Carl are traveling to the moon in space, Sheen mentions why they don't wear any space helmet or why they don't suffocate in space. To prevent Jimmy from revealing a fake truth and not the real truth, Carl is put in singing very loud and off note.
- Jimmy's computer is named Vox, which is the Latin word for voice.
- In the episode "Nightmare in Retroville", when Hugh walks goes into Jimmy's Lab, a picture of Michael Jackson can be seen on the wheel of monsters.
- In the episode "I Dream of Jimmy", Sheen mentions having a little sister, although she is yet to be seen.
- In Battle of the Band, while Jimmy and his friends are in the classroom before the show, they all act like The Beatles' band members. Carl imitates John Lennon (With the same glasses, hair style and a woman next to him resembling to Yoko Ono). He also talks in a British accent. Sheen becomes Ringo Starr, asking for a drum solo right before the end of their friendship, and the real Ringo gets one in "The End" which is their final proper recorded song. Finally, Jimmy becomes Paul McCartney, as he tries to organise everything and stop the other two from fighting, which caused the band start to not get along. If there was another boy in the group, they probably would have become George Harrison, and probably acted quiet and shy, just like Mr. Harrison really was.
- In the episode "Aaughh!! Wilderness!!", when Jimmy makes the campsite from one of his gadgets, the NES makes an appearance, as Sheen is seen playing video games. Another appearance is the Atari 2600's controller.
- In the episode "Maximum Hugh", after Jimmy confesses that he and Hugh cheated, Coach Willaby began to name other teams to win the Picnic Games, all of which confessed of cheating. One of the teams was Team DeCarlo, which is a referamce to Mark DeCarlo, who plays the voice for Hugh Neutron, which the episode is named after.
- In the episode "Mighty Wheezers", Carl mimics Peter Parker's actions in the movie Spider-Man by taking off his glasses, comparing his vision with and without his glasses.Carl also can stick to walls.
- In the episode where Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen use the air-gum underwater, there is a very tiny Spongebob Squarepants' Pineapple in the background. This is revealed in "A Closer Look" break on Nick.
- In the episode The Tomorrow Boys, Jimmy experiments with a gas he calls "megalo-manium", which makes anyone it touches mad with power. This a reference to a "megalomaniac", someone mad with power.
- The television theme music was written and performed by Brian Causey (a.k.a Star Crunch from or Astro-man?">Man or Astro-man?). The version of the theme song in the film, while based on Causey's theme, was performed by Bowling For Soup.
- The show features humor which is far more sophisticated than many of the other shows on Nickelodeon, such as SpongeBob SquarePants. This in particular helped make it popular among teenagers and adults.
- In "Sleepless in Retroville" after Carl creates the Pizza Monster and Jimmy says "I can't delete the pizza! The screen's frozen!", the Slumbertron 5000's screen shows the "Blue Screen of Death."
- In the episode when Ms. Fowl becomes a monster, in the military base, there is a captain named captain Ambercrombie a reference to the clothing company Abercrombie.
- In the Christmas special, when Carl gets his present, you can see the frog he drew in the movie hanging on the wall.
