- Copa Libertadores 1989: Won by Atlético Nacional after defeating Olimpia Asunción 5-4 on a penalty shootout after a final aggregate score of 2-2.
- April 15 - Hillsborough disaster, that occurred at Hillsborough, a football stadium in Sheffield, England, the home of Sheffield Wednesday F.C., before match from Liverpool F.C. (were involved in their 17th FA Cup Semi-Final), to be played against Nottingham Forest F.C., resulting in the loss of 96 lives.
