Danmarks Tekniske Museum er oprettet i 1911 af Håndværkerforeningen i København og Danmarks Industriforening.

Oprindeligt var museets udstillinger placeret på Polyteknisk Læreanstalt i København. Senere kommer der en afdeling i Hellerup.
I 1966-1969 flyttes museet til Helsingør. I 1984-1995 havde museet en afdeling i Aalborg.

I årene efter 1911 overtager museet en række samlinger, der var grundlagt i 1800-tallet. Museet fik blandt andet samlingen fra det nedlagte Dansk Industrimuseum.
Senere har Danmarks Tekniske Museum overtaget en række nyere samlinger fra nedlagte specialmuseer.
