This image shows the colours reflected from a thin film of water depending on the thickness of the film and the angle of incidence. Each point is coloured according to its polar coordinates. The radial coordinate is proportional to the thickness of the film, with the outer radius corresponding to 690 nm, and the angular coordinate is the angle of incidence, with the y-axis corresponding to normal incidence. The colours were calculated assuming unpolarized standard D65 illumination and using the wavelength-dependent refractive index of water as specified by the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam, at a temperature of 20 °C and a density of 1 kg/l. The reflectance of the film for linearly polarized light is given by
- ,
where Γ is the complex phase factor incurred by a double traversal of the film and R is the reflectance of a single interface as given by the Fresnel equations. The reflectance for unpolarized light is obtained by averaging over the two polarization modes.
