Manchester là thành phố đông bắc nước Anh. Thành phố này nổi tiếng trong lịch sử là thành phố công nghiệp hóa đầu tiên của thế giới và vai trò trung tâm của nó trong cuộc Cách mạng công nghiệp. Thành phố Manchester được mệnh danh là "Bắc đô của nước Anh", ^{[1] [2]} là một trung tâm nghệ thuật, truyền thông, giáo dục đại học và thương mại và được xem như "Thành phố xếp thứ nhì của Anh". ^{[3] [4]}

Thành phố Manchester là một đô thị với cấp thành phố của Vương quốc Anh. Nội thành thành phố có 441.200 dân nhưng Vùng đô thị Đại Manchester thì có dân số 2.240.230 dân. khiến nó là thành phố lớn thứ 3 của Anh, xếp sau Vùng đô thị Đại London và khu vực đô thị Tây Trung bộ Anh.

Manchester nổi tiếng với thể thao, là thành phố chủ nhà của Manchester City và tổ chức Thế vận hội của Khối thịnh vượng chung năm 2002.

Cần lưu ý rằng, Manchester United nằm trong Vùng đô thị Đại Manchester chứ không thuộc trong nội thành thành phố Manchester mà thuộc thành phố Trafford. Nhưng đây là câu lạc bộ bóng đá lớn nhất của thành phố và là câu lạc bộ thành công nhất của thành phố này trong các giải thi đấu của cúp bóng đá châu Âu và Anh.

Manchester city centre is on a "tentative list" of UNESCO World Heritage Sites—mainly based around its network of canals and mills, which facilitated its development during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. ^[5]

Manchester has been occasionally called Cottonopolis, as during the Industrial Revolution, it was a leading international centre of cotton spinning. ^[6] More recently the city has been referred to as 'Madchester' due to the city's prominent music scene of the same name.

The Greater Manchester county consists of the City of Manchester and the other metropolitan boroughs which surround it: Trafford, Tameside, Salford, Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Stockport.
