Note: Crimea is an autonomous republic inside Ukraine. Status of Russian language in this territory is under dispute. Crimea had been officially part of Russia (see RSFSR) until 1954. The majority of the population speaks Russian as their first language. Local authorities of Crimea adopted legislation designating Russian as official language of the republic. Central authorities in Kiev consider this legislation unconstitutional.
