Sad

Sadness is an emotion. It is the opposite of happiness. People feel sad when something bad has happened e.g. someone they love has died or when they are parted from friends. The word "miserable" has a similar meaning.
The word sad (as an adjective) has also started to be used in a different way in the last few years, especially by young people. People might say that someone is "sad" if their behaviour is different from most other people, in particular if they are rather old-fashioned. Someone who tries to dress in a "cool", fashionable way but actually looks rather silly might be described as "sad". People might be described as "sad" if their interests are rather strange and they have no friends. Of course, using "sad" in this way is a very subjective (personal) thing, sometimes rather unkind, and often tells us more about the speaker than the person being described. Words like "anorak" and "nerd" are also used for sad people who spend their time in activities that most people think are stupid such as loco spotting (writing down train numbers) and twitching (looking for rare birds).
In big letters it means something else. SAD, or S.A.D. is short for "Seasonal Affective Disorder". SAD is a sickness that affects some people in the winter. They feel depressed because there is not much daylight.
