Ovum
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
Ovum is Latin and means egg. The plural is Ova. It is the name for the haploid female reproductive cell. Haploid reproductive cells are also called gametes. If the cell is still young (and developing) the term ovule is commonly used. In some plants, like algae this type of cell is called oosphere.
Once the cell is fertilised (by a sperm), it starts to divide, and a new organism develops.
