Chemnitz

Chemnitz is a city in Germany. It is located in Saxony. About 245.000 people live there. (as of 2006). During the partition of Germany, when the city was in East Germany, it was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. This was from 1953 to 1990. The name was in reference to the social reformer Karl Marx. The current (and old name) of the city is from the river that flows through it.
The first mention of the city was in 1143. The city had an important role in the Industrial Revolution. About 1883 the city population passed 100.000 inhabitants.
Today it is among the more important cities of the eastern part of Germany.
