Laurence Stern

Laurence Sterne (ur 24 listopada 1713 , zm. 18 marca 1768) był angielskim duchownym i pisarzem. Znany przede wszystkim ze swych powieści: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman i A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. Opublikował również ksiegi modlitewne. Zmarł na gruźlicę w Londynie po wielu latach walki z chorobą.

Laurence Sterne urodził się w Clonmel,hrabstwie Tipperary w Irlandii. Jego ojciec był oficerem regimentu, który powrócił z Dunkierki krótko przed narodzinami laurence'a. Pułk został rozwiazany dokładnie w dzień narodzin Sterne'a. pozbawiony wojskowych obowiązków ojciec przyszłego pisarza powrócił, wraz z rodziną do Yorkshire w północnej Anglii.
Pierwsza dekada życia Sterne’a upłynęła pod znakiem ciagłych przeprowadzek po Anglii i Irlandii, nie zatrzymując się nigdzie na dłużej niż na rok. Gdy miał dziesięć lat, wybrano dla niego Hipperholme Grammar School niedaleko Halifax. Nigdy już nie miał zobaczyć swego ojca. W roku 1733 , w wieku 20 lat przyjęto go do Jesus College, Cambridge, który prowadził kiedyś (dwu lub trzykrotnie) jego pradziadek (w 1664 arcybisup York). Sterne ukończył College z tytułem: Bachelor of Arts w styczniu 1737 roku i powrócił latem 1740 by otrzymać dyplom magistra Master of Arts .

Jego prace zebrane po raz pierwszy w 1779 roku, zostały wraz z nowo odkrytymi listami wydane przez: J. P. Browne'A (London, 1873). Mniej kompletna edycja: G. Saintsbury (London, 1894). Najleszą obecnie jest The Florida Edition choć ostatni piąty tom (Sterne's letters) dopiero ma być opublikowany.
