Kod prefiksowy (ang. prefix code) to taki kod, w którym żaden znak (a dokładniej jego reprezentacja) nie może się "pomylić" z przedrostkiem (początkiem) reprezentacji innego znaku.
Stosując takie kodowanie możliwe jest uzyskanie maksymalnego stopnia kompresji dla kodowania z reprezentacjami znaków przypisanymi na stałe.
