Dame Vera Lynn, all'anagrafe Vera Margaret Welch, è nata il 20 marzo 1917 a Londra. Il soprannome Lynn, il nome di sua nonna prima del matrimonio, lo prese successivamente come nome d'arte. Ella cominciò a cantare all'età di sette anni. Ella fece la sua prima trasmissione radiofonica nel '35 con l'Orchestra Joe Loss. In questo momento inizio ad incidere con la collaborzionedei Loss's e dei Charlie KUnt'z . Nel '39 sposa il clarinettista e sassofonista Harry Lewis. In questo anno registra la sua più celebre canzone "We'll meet again". Negli anni della guerra si prodigherà per portare conforto ai soldati inglesi al fronte incidendo canzoni come "sincerly yours" o visitandogli ospedali in cui risiedono le numerosissime vittime di bombardamenti. La nostalgica canzone "We'll meet again" diventa in questi anni il simobolo e l'incoraggiamento delle persone che uniteda un forte amore sono separate dalla guerra e desiderano con tutto il cuore di potersi un giorno rincontrare. Dopo la guerra inciderà altre canzoni che riscuoteranno un buon successo; tra queste è obbligatorio citare "my son, my son" il singolo inglese numero uno nel '54. Continuera la sua attività fino al 1995. Nel VE'day inglese del 2005 ha fatto un apparizione a sorpresa incitando, sopratutto i giovani, a non dimenticare il sacrificio che fece la Gran Bretagna in quei drammatici anni. Ella è una delle grandi intrattenitrici degli anni della guerra ancora in vita.
