[sunting] History
[sunting] Early years
The word ihoud (Hebrew: איחוד) means "united" and was added when Maccabi Sakhnin and Hapoel Sakhnin joined to become one club, simply called Ihoud Bnei Sakhnin or Bnei Sakhnin United, though UEFA refers to the club still as Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin.

[sunting] Ligat ha'Al
In its first season in Israel's top league, Bnei Sakhnin was expected to be quickly relegated along with fellow Israeli Arab club Maccabi Ahi Nazareth. Questions remained as to whether the squad that promoted this team was able to compete at this level, along with the added pressures not to become the next Hapoel Taibe. They also lost manager Momy Zafran who decided not to continue and brought in Eyal Lahman, who was a bit foreign to the club.
The club signed former Maccabi Haifa FC striker Raffi Cohen and loaned another striker, Lior Asulin from Maccabi Herzliya. Sagi Strauss was brought in to mind the nets from Maccabi Petah Tikva.
[sunting] Liga Leumit Return
This season, Bnei Sakhnin returns to the Liga Leumit. Hopes are that with a budget of five and a half million New Israeli Shekels, the club will be able to return quickly to Israel's Ligat ha'Al (Premier League). It will be a difficult task as Israeli clubs have been targeting Sakhnin players to bolster their rosters leaving Sakhnin with a very youthful squad for the upcoming season.
[sunting] Sponsorship
Last season the club signed a shirt sponsorship deal with Israeli telecom company Cellcom. Talks are currently ensuing over continuing the deal even though the chief executive of Cellcom's Arab sector affairs, Suliman Diab, has left his non-executive post with Bnei Sakhnin to join Bnei Tamra.
The club's budget was bolstered on June 15, 2006 when businessman Arcadi Gaydamak announced that he would donate ₪2 million to the club in hopes that they will make a return to Israel's top league. This is not the first time that Gaydamak has donated money to Sakhnin. On August 23, 2005 he gave US $400,000 to the team in hopes to promote peace and harmony among the citizens of Israel.
[sunting] Support
The fan base of Bnei Sakhnin is very small in comparison to other Israeli clubs. The majority of fans of Bnei Sakhin are Arab Israelis but the club does have many Jewish Israeli fans from the neigboring kibbutzim.
Big matches (especially those against rival club Beitar Jerusalem) can attract large crowds but toward the end of the 2005/06 season when the club was set to be relegated, the attendance at matches declined dramatically. The peak of fan attendance was the Israel State Cup final when Ramat Gan Stadium was filled with Arabs from Israel, Jordan, Qatar and the UAE who had all come to support the club.
Hoolganism has also been a problem for Bnei Sakhnin, mostly springing from the culture of obsession regarding football that has dwarfed the games themselves. On January 29, 2005 Sakhnin fans rioted at Haifa's Qiryat Eliezer Stadium during a match against Hapoel Tel Aviv FC after a violent incident on the field between a team official and a referee, who earlier had shown red cards to two of Sakhnin players for vicious fouls. The Israel Football Association penalized Bnei Sakhnin by making them play two games without fans.

[sunting] Notes
Sakhnin participated in the UEFA Cup of 2004/2005 reaching the first round after beating KF Partizani Tirana 6-1 on aggregate in the second qualifying round. There, they lost to eventual quarter-finalists Newcastle United 7-1 on aggregate.
Although Sakhnin only recently moved into Israel's Premier League and later relegated, they've automatically become one of the more controversial teams, a result of its Arab identity and its fans' behaviour. Every game between Sakhnin and Beitar Jerusalem has resulted in fan violence, despite Sakhnin's Chairman Ghnaim's stated mission to create a "cultural rainbow" out of his small football club in the Galilee. When Sakhnin won the State Cup, an obituary was sponsored by Beitar fans in Israel's leading daily Yediot Akhronot claiming that Israeli football was dead. One of the leaders of the fans also compared Sakhnin to Al Qaeda.
