Zheltoksan

Zheltoksan (Zheltoxan, Jeltoxan) - a revolt in Almaty and other cities of Kazakhstan, started on December 16, 1986 when Soviet Politburo replaced Dinmukhamed Kunayev with Gennady Kolbin as the first Secretary of the Kazakh SSR. Several protesters were killed and hundreds injured

Zheltoksan means December in Kazakh.

Since obtaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 the day of December 16 is celebrated as Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
