Zdeněk Mácal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zdeněk Mácal [ma:tsal] (often written Zdenek Macal) (born January 8, 1936 in Brno) is a Czech conductor. After a promising career in Czechoslovakia, he left the country after the Soviet-led invasion of 1968 crushed the Prague Spring, finding work first at the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. Later, in America, he served as Music Director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. In 2003 he was appointed chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

He was also Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, but his contract was cut short due to clashes with musicians and management.

Mácal has also performed and recorded works with the London Philharmonia, including Richard Danielpour's Celestial Night. (Sony 60779)
