Xatu (ネイティオ Neiteio ?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon Franchise – a series of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri.

The purpose of Xatu in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[1]

The name Xatu could be derived from the same origins of its pre-evolved form, Natu, as Xatu seems to have native patterns on its body, only with the letter 'N' replaced with an 'X' to symbolize something unknown and mysterious. [2]

[edit] Appearance

Xatu is bird-like, with a colourful and elaborate plumage that suggest some resemblance to a parrot. It is drawn in a style influenced from ancient North and South American civilizations, such as the Maya, the Aztecs or the Incas. It also resembles a totem pole. On its chest can be seen two small red eyes.

in Pokémon Pearl and Pokémon Diamond its male sprite has an extra yellow stripe along its skirt like cover for its feet.

[edit] Biology

In the Pokémon world Xatu is one of the more revered Pokémon, especially in South American countries, where it is said that Xatu is adept in seeing into times other than the present. In particular, its left eye is said to view the past, while the right can peer into the future. Many trainers believe that it can see the present with the eye-like design on its chest, under its wings.

When meditating, Xatu hardly moves over the course of an entire day other than to keep its gaze fixed at the sun. This behavior is not fully explained. Xatu might be overwhelmed by the visual feedback of seeing two different time periods at once, or in terror at seeing the perils the future holds.

[edit] In the video games

Xatu can be evolved from Natu at level 25, but it can also be found in the Safari Zone in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Xatu has very good speed and special attack, with the rest of its stats being average. It learns a variety of useful moves, such as Night Shade, Confuse Ray, and Wish, as well as Psychic. It can be used in a straightforward offensive manner, or employ Wish and then switch to heal another Pokémon in one's team. Giving it Giga Drain gives it a defense against Rock types, which Xatu is weak against.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Xatu warns the player that a human was turned into a Pokémon and caused all the natural disasters and warns the player of the unthinkable (end of the world). Later, he warns everyone about a meteor aproaching and sends you to ask Rayquaza to destroy the meteor. He creates a gem with the power of Alakazam and a Ghost-type pokemon (Gengar?) to send the player to the Sky Tower.

[edit] In the anime

Xatu has had three main appearances. First, in episode #236 (Xatu the Future) one was owned by a woman named Callista who lived in a secret underground facility of the ancients. Her Xatu supposedly predicted a great flood to come. Then, it appeared in episode #352 (Me, myself and Time) in the possession of a mysterious archaeologist who studied some ruins. Finally, it was seen in episode #362 (The film's riding on Camerupt) in a spoof of the movie Titanic, as the male protagonist.

[edit] In the trading card game

Xatu has appeared several times in the card game, Stage-1 and Psychic-type in every case, except for in EX Dragon Frontiers, where is is a δ Dark type:

  • Neo Genesis
  • Neo Discovery
  • Skyridge
  • Sandstorm
  • EX Deoxys
  • EX Unseen Forces
  • EX Dragon Frontiers (as Xatu δ, a Dark type)
