[edit] Duplicate content?

It seems like there's an awful lot of duplication between the Overview section and the Features section. I'd change it myself, but I revamped most of the article in the first place, and I don't want to think too highly of myself as an editor. Can anyone take a look at the most recent developments? Jeff Bowman 03:26, May 3, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Too much POV

This article seems to have a high level of POV. The body of the article seems a bit like an advertisement to me. Comments?

I don't think so, so much. Xanga hasn't had much of anything "encyclopedic" happen to it, so we're just left with a list of features. Any time you put a list of features on a site, it's going to look like an advertisement. However, I think whoever put the extra content into the Overview section might have gone a little far, because that's mostly a plagiarised advertisement from the Xanga Premium website. I'll admit that I'm a little biased, since I've had a Xanga for a while, and I do freelance advertisement work for them sometimes...but I tried to stay neutral while contributing. Jeff Bowman 01:37, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] blah

No one seems to notice that since the default eprops given is two, it doesnt really matter how many eprops a person gives. Most people give two, and if they care, maybe one or zero. Kinda... useless.

And what about christinie_the_weenie ? (Don't remember if this is right). She won Adult Swim's Have it Your Way contest and controlled AS for a night. She also gave out her xanga name, which caused a whole buch of people to give her eprops. Blueaster 01:13, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

I personally have a xanga, and I really like it. I don't think its an ad. I mean they only get money if you subscribe to Premium, and its not like theres so much extra stuff. Freddy Tsao you can see my xanga by clicking my user^.^ and give comments!!! jk

I have a Xanga to keep up with my friends. That is it. I think it's dumb though because to get something you have to pay money and then you only get 2 extra features you didn't have. WOW! lol TearAwayTheFunerealDress 15:05, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

I have a xanga and so do my friends, but for some reason, my friends' xangas were shut down. -Alice —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.255.115.171 (talkcontribs) 15:56 8 April 2006 (UTC).

It's probably because they violated some rule, like no ads or no one under 13. Masta shih 12:28, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
actually, they allowed under-13s up til a couple of months ago. I only use my xanga to KIT wiv my friends overseas. <=I moved recently. I personally think xanga is easier to navigate thru than myspace... HyperSushi21 04:26, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] pronunciation

the pronunciation of 'xanga' is in the 'Comments' section of the entry. i'm guessing it should be somewhere else... not sure where though. bunnyhero 18:04, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

it's pronounced like Zanga

[edit] Needs history

This article needs some history on how Xanga was created/founded, etc. --Gary King 22:08, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Or at least when it was created. I was curious and disappointed to discover the Wikipedia article doesn't have this information. I use LiveJournal, but I was curious about other blogging sites out there. (ugh...I hate how that's the "new" word in the media these days...it only took them five or six years) — Image:Rainbow.pngIndi [ talk ] 23:10, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Xanga goes back to 1999. That's all I know.

yea, but in 'Pronunciation', it says that "Xangarelic" is the term used by Xangans who have been around since the startup (Dec. 2000) to refer to themselves. HyperSushi21 04:31, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] You can use HTML on Xanga

A critism that you can't use HTML on Xanga is listed. This is untrue; Xanga supports both HTML and JavaScript. This should be removed or rewritten, if the person who added it ment something other than this. -Phantom784 23:20, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Yes, you can use HTML on Xanga, if you don't have rich text (which happened to me once :P) --68.95.141.158 02:37, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, Xanga strips lots of tags from your HTML which have abuse potential such as iframe, meta refresh, things in <script>. Comments only allow <b>i,u,a.

[edit] IPA Pronunciation

I have added [ˈzeɪŋa] as the IPA pronunciation of Xanga to the beginning of the article and removed the comment about pronunciation from the "Comments" section. Mga 23:24, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Notable News

It seems to me that the articles under notable news are rather negative. I don't know if those were the only availible articles, however if someone reads this page for the first time and wants to get an idea of xanga, it seems as though this section (notable news) degrades xanga to a certain extent.

I agree that xanga has these negative things going on, but does this section have to only mention these articles, giving people a negative conotation? There are very few articles here which mention xanga in a good way.

What do you think?

--ForAlways 00:41, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

The Notable News section seems to have inaccurate dates. Why is an article referring to July 2006 if it is only Febuary?

[edit] Vandalism

This page has been vandalized. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Superway25 (talkcontribs) 19:37 16 March 2006 (UTC).

Thanks but people do watch the article and revert vandalism when they see it. :) - nathanrdotcom (TCW)`

[edit] Criticisms

I have two more personal criticisms of Xanga, but wanted to make sure they were global enough to add to the list.  :)

1) Ads. Xanga does have ads and even though ads on the internet are almost assumed there are some comparable blogging sites that do not have ads. By signing up a Premium or Premium Plus! account you can get rid of the ads surrounding your particular Xanga. Since I do not have a paid account I do not know if there is a way to remove the ads while browsing Xanga (unless you use an ad-blocking browser).

I have a premium acct. You still get ads while viewing other people's sites. Browsing through "Read Your Subscriptions" doesn't solve the problem either. (tyger 17:33, 23 May 2006 (UTC))
Oh there are ways to get around ;) you can use <ILAYER> tags and other crude methods (like <DIV> and <NOSCRIPT>) of moving or deleting it off the page. Masta shih 18:24, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

2) There is a music feature that allows Xangans to play an mp3 in the background of their main Xanga page. This will play on the end user's computer while they are reading someone else's Xanga. The feature often gives errors while trying to find song files and as best as I can tell, there is no way to turn the music off. When opening bunches of Xanga pages in tabs, the browser I use will also play them simultaneously. I realize this may be credited to a particular browser issue... but still.  :P

The easiest way around this is to simply view other Xangas through your subscriptions page but this option is not always available.

The argument can be made that since Xanga does not require you to use the music feature Xanga should not be blamed for allowing people to use it. I personally do not think the feature should be allowed at all, but if they have to leave it there please implement it a little better than it currently is, such as offering an option to turn the music off (or perhaps I just keep missing it...).

A default music player should be intregrated into Xanga's blogware...much like how MySpace has handle the problem. (tyger 17:33, 23 May 2006 (UTC))

Do these seem like valid criticisms to be added to the main page? MrHen 21:17, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

I believe that music looping in the background can be stopped by clicking the browser's 'Stop' button. I wouldn't exactly call background music a feature because any webpage can do it. It's not specific to Xanga. Gordeonbleu 03:54, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... the stop button does not work with Safari. Perhaps it does with other browsers. Yes, background music is possible on all websites, but Xanga has a specific form for it. As a result, people do it all the time. But I do understand what you mean.  :D
i don't think these are valid criticisms. if people don't like the above stated 'criticisms' they wouldn't be using xanga. i know 10+ who have xangas and not one of them ever complained of any of thoes things. i won't delete them but if people [majority] agree with me, i will delete them. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.230.73.113 (talkcontribs) 15:31 17 April 2006 (UTC).
I don't think the music criticism is as valid as the ad critique. A person who pays for Premium should not have to view Ads within the "Read Your Subscriptions" area. (tyger 17:33, 23 May 2006 (UTC))
The ads aren't completely fair as a criticism since Xanga's premium information section specifically says that premium gets rid of the ads on your public pages, which the subscriptions page is not. (http://www.xanga.com/about/premium/#ad) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.215.190.55 (talkcontribs) 15:55 4 June 2006 (UTC).
ads aren't that annoying as long as they're on the sides. I don't have premium but on my "Read You Subscriptions" page, there aren't any ads on it, just the banner ad which is small enuf. as to the music, a lot of ppl put playlists on their xangas instead of just putting in a URL in the Music box on the CLAF (example: http://www.xanga.com/Hyper_Sushi21 <= that's my xanga, my playlist is up in my header somewhere) and if the music bugs you so much, just mute your comp! HyperSushi21 04:40, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup

The timelines are way too long and we don't need quite this much coverage on features. The Pronunciation section is also a misnomer. I might get around to working on this soon, but I've tagged this article in case anyone else also wants to take a stab at it. æle  2006-05-28t02:09z

I added more to features :b I think it would be better to cover all the features in-depth, since it's what Xanga is all about. Masta shih 18:21, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] xangalympics

The allegation that there was no winner announced to the xangalympics is disputed, even on the site that the article links to. Unless someone can substantiate this allegation, I would like to remove this from the article. MikeNM 20:32, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] POV ... and source needed

I hope you don't mind that I popped in and cleaned up this POV statement a bit :-) ... The original statement was: "Xanga is very cliquish, and most users now hide behind the Xanga lock feature, or use scripts to block outsiders from reading content." And I changed it to read: "Most Xanga users enable the Xanga Lock feature, or use scripts to block non-members from reading content." Specifically, I wanted to address the use of "cliquish" and "outsiders" ... I also added a note that we need a source for the alleged statistic (most). 204.57.115.38

Actually, I'm pretty sure this statement is inaccurate. I'm going to delete it. --EarthGuardian 15:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Xangazon

So, I was checking out what Xanga used to look like on the Wayback Machine and I saw this "Links to products such as books, movies, and music can make you money! If you write a great book review and your visitors click through the link and buy the book you can make a 15% commission on every sale." I'm assuming those links are the Xangazon things that people put on their site like "Currently Watching:" and "Currently Reading"...

I was just wondering: 1) Can you still make commision off of the stuff you link to? 2) Is there enough information on Xangazon to mention it in this article?--Teh darkcloud 23:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alright, I give up

What in the feck's a nudge, anyway? --24.221.178.62 06:48, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

A nudge is a bootlegged form of the "poke" feature on facebook.com (tyger 03:32, 27 May 2006 (UTC))
...And what in the world's a poke, then? --24.221.178.62 21:57, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, what 24.221.178.62 said; what's a nudge and what's a poke? --71.109.37.168 22:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC) Nevermind. According to facebook, this is what a poke is:

  • We have about as much of an idea as you do. We thought it would be fun to make a feature that had no

real purpose and to see what happens from there. So mess around with it, because you're not getting an explanation from us. --71.109.37.168 22:12, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

FTC Press Release: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2006/09/xanga.htm

[edit] Too much non-encyclopaedic / non-notable content

Most of the content (volume-wise) is non-encyclopaedic and unnecessary. I don't see why I'd be interested in detailed history of the site, including entries such "Xanga finally lets RSS feeds out of the closet" or some guy writing fancy comments code, or pronunciation guide. The article should be stripped to contain only information useful for someone who's not participating in Xanga, the rest has no place here, especially in hype-happy language that's used now. mathrick 05:10, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
