The series began in 1978 by Ted Johnson after wings were added to sprint cars. It is often considered one of the highest levels of dirt track oval racing in the world and has produced many drivers that have been successful in NASCAR and Indycar racing. The 2006 championship features 73 points-paying races. Events are broadcast weekly on The Outdoor Channel. The series has a rival called National Sprint Tour.
