2 articles, same topic. Both well written, but this one seems to be fit into the overall Category:Ice hockey tournaments better. I like some of the writing and layout of other article too ... I'd like to see us adopt the best of both. ... ColtsScore 08:07, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Actually, I want a new name along with the merge

The IIHF still calls this tournament the 'IIHF World U20 Championship'. Here's the IIHF calendar with 2006-07 U20 listed. I know the Swedish site for the 2006-07 calls it the World Junior Championships, but the IIHF is the organizing body. I think their name should stand.
World Juniors, WJC, World Junior Championships (etc, etc) are the common names, more recognizable for marketing, and so they get used a lot. We can make redirects for all those names and point them to the article.
I also think there should be a "IIHF World U18 Championship" page too. This tournament occurs in April, and has nothing to do with the 'world junior championships' in Dec./Jan.
Finally, the IIHF World Championships are the men's over 20 ones that just took place in May.
Three different articles, with the official IIHF names. What does everyone else think?

Sounds good to me. The content from the Ice Hockey World Junior Championships was just a straight cutout from the main Ice Hockey World Championships, so it might not be as cohesive. Let's pick the official title, split the U18 out into it's own article. I'm busy today, but if this isn't done, I can do it on Saturday. -- Jeff3000 09:26, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

One thing to keep in mind, is the policy on Naming conventions. It states, "Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature." Agreed as well. The articles should be merged, but "World Junior Ice Hockey Championship" is the name most of the world refers to this tournament as. Its formal name is simply for classification purposes within the IIHF. Resolute 23:28, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

My take is that NC would make "IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship" (singular, not plural...) seems like it's a good enough choice, although we could move it to simply "World Junior Hockey Championship" if there isn't a similar thing for field hockey. Similarly, I see "IIHF World Hockey Championship" more often than "Ice Hockey World Championship" where I'm from. kelvSYC 20:23, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

The merge is done, some content from Ice Hockey World Junior Championships was brought into this article (very little), and some content was put into IIHF World U18 Championships.

Personally, I would rather have it by the "U20" name that the IIHF calls it. I have no clue why in Canada, that we call it something else... ... probably because we practically ignore the other major "Uxx" Tournaments that other countries seem to excell at. I'd prefer to see the formal international use name here, as this is an international event... and we are one of the few countries to call it the WJHC. DMighton 10:12, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Thirded, as it were. One of the most useful things on Wiki is being able to find what something is referred to officially, rather than colloquially. Most of the time, folks won't even recognise that they've been redirected. Battlemonk 05:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

We could always set up redirects. Redirects Are Cheap. I've only ever seen it referred to as the WOrld Juniors, possibly because Canadian media are the only english-speaking people reporting on the world juniors.  RasputinAXP  c 12:59, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Seems the official name is "IIHF World U20 Championship", and we should use precisely that, with a note that it's commonly called "World Junior Hockey Championships," with a redirect from the latter to the former. Doogie2K (talk) 20:19, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
