[edit] Background

Woody Goodman is a powerful citizen of Neptune. He owns Neptune's professional baseball team, the Sharks, as well as Woody's Burgers.

Woody Goodman first meets Veronica Mars at the start of the second season during a tour of Shark Field on the ill-fated field trip that ended in several students' tragic deaths. At first it seems that Woody is a genuinely good person who is trying to make Neptune safer, by running for the Balboa County Supervisor's office. The position is historically referred to as the "Mayor of Neptune", since it is stated in the series that Neptune is in fact an unincorporated community. Woody asks Keith Mars, Veronica's father, to join his campaign by running for sheriff. Keith agrees to run, but eventually loses to Don Lamb.

[edit] Incorporation

Woody, on the other hand, wins his election and sets in motion his plan to incorporate Neptune. Woody believes that if Neptune were to incorporate, the town would become safer and cleaner. It would also further divide the rich and poor parts of Neptune. Woody tells Keith that if his plan for incorporation passes that he will make Keith the Chief of Police. Before Woody's incorporation plan goes up for a vote he receives a threatening DVD in the mail from someone who was against Neptune's incorporation. The DVD contains a video of Woody and his family at home and it was shot from within the Goodman household. Woody hires Keith to investigate the DVD. Using visual clues present in the video, Keith discovers that the footage was shot in November, well before Woody announced his plans to incorporate Neptune. Upon hearing this from Keith, Woody tells Keith that he discovered that the footage was shot by a disgruntled gardener and Woody asked for the DVD back. Keith, not completely trusting Woody, made a copy of the DVD before giving it back to Woody.

To drum up some publicity, Woody hosts an essay contest where the winner would get to spend some time as his assistant and also push the detonator on Shark Field to implode it and make way for a new stadium. Logan Echolls won the contest. Woody, realizing that Logan's reputation might tarnish his own, pulled back on the amount of publicity, but still allowed Logan to detonate Shark Field. Woody's lack of concern over the motorcycle that was found chained inside Shark Field was an indirect cause of Thumper being crushed to death when the stadium imploded.

Right before the incorporation vote, Woody calls Keith Mars to help him with some trouble. Woody woke up in a motel room with an unconscious member of his campaign staff and needs Keith's help in getting her to the hospital. Woody does not want to take the chance of being seen dropping the girl off at the hospital as this would hurt his marriage and the incorporation vote. Keith agrees, and drops her off at the hospital. When Keith is photographed carrying the unconscious girl out, Woody lets him take the fall. Keith tells the truth to the news media and the stories are printed before the incorporation vote, causing incorporation to fail. From this point on Woody and Keith become rivals.

[edit] Woody and the bus crash

Woody Goodman first started to become linked to the bus crashed when Veronica found C4 in the hangar that Terrence Cook used to store his expensive cars. Veronica later found out that the hangar was owned by Woody and that he allowed Terrance Cook to use it.

Later, when Veronica Mars is inside the Goodman home while working on a case for Woody's daughter Gia, she searches through Woody's computer. Veronica and Keith had been suspicious of Goodman ever since he received the threatening DVD in the mail. In the computer she finds an anonymous email containing a sound file of two boys talking about outing Woody as a child molester. Veronica eventually figures out that the two boys talking were actually Peter Ferrer and Marcos Oliveres, two of the people that died on the bus crash.

Woody becomes one of the prime suspects in the bus crash and flees Neptune. Keith eventually catches up with Woody, tasers him and brings him into custody. Woody admits to being a child molester, but he denies any involvement in the bus crash. It turns out that the bus crash was orchestrated by Cassidy Casablancas, another little league player who was molested by Woody. In a final move of revenge against Woody, Cassidy detonated a bomb in the plane that was flying Goodman back to Neptune. The plane exploded, killing him.

Even from beyond the grave, however, Woody continues to plague Veronica's life. Woody is indirectly responsible for her having chlamydia; he had the disease when he molested Cassidy, who later raped Veronica at a party.
