Wolfgang Thierse

Wolfgang Thierse is a German politician.

He was born on October 22, 1943 in Breslau. He is a Roman Catholic, grew up in East Germany and studied German at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin. Later, he worked for the east-german ministry for cultural affairs. In 1989, he joined the opposition movement Neues Forum and in 1990 the SPD. He was elected deputy chairman and subsequently became a member of the Bundestag.

After the SPD's victory in the 1998 general elections, he was elected as President of the German Bundestag and served for two terms until October 2005, when he was succeeded by Norbert Lammert. Thierse was elected vice president of the Bundestag.
