Wilberforce, Ohio

Wilberforce is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Greene County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,579 at the 2000 census. It is the home of two historically black universities, Central State University and Wilberforce University. It is named for the 18th century English statesman and abolitionist William Wilberforce.

Wilberforce is located at 39°42′57″N, 83°52′48″W (39.715739, -83.880022)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.59%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,579 people, 189 households, and 133 families residing in the community. The population density was 197.3/km² (510.7/mi²). There were 220 housing units at an average density of 27.5/km² (71.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the community was 11.21% White, 84.17% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 3.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.27% of the population.

There were 189 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% were non-families. 28.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the community the population was spread out with 7.8% under the age of 18, 69.5% from 18 to 24, 9.4% from 25 to 44, 7.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 21 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the community was $31,641, and the median income for a family was $39,038. Males had a median income of $4,706 versus $23,906 for females. The per capita income for the community was $10,483. None of the families and 6.5% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 16.3% of those over 64.
