Whitley Gilbert

Whitley Marion Gilbert Wayne is a fictional character from the 1980's Black sitcom A Different World. She was portrayed by Jasmine Guy. At first, a completely spoiled and snobby rich girl who had a best friend named Millie, a more mature Whitley later portrayed Dwayne Wayne's wife during the sixth and final season.

In the beginning of the series Whitley Gilbert was the Southern Belle of Gilbert Hall. Denise Huxtable and Whitley shared her room briefly before Denise went back to Jaleesa. Later in the 1st season, Whitley befriended Millie. At the end of the season, Whitley loaned Dwayne money so that he could go on his date with Denise.

When Denise left the show, Whitley became the star of the show. The character's personality changed vigorously. She shared an attraction with Dwayne during the next 2 seasons of the show. Although of the attraction, Whitley dated Julian Day during Season 3. The relationship was fake and many episodes centered on how Whitley was miserable with Julian. At the end of the third season, Whitley decided to stay in school for another year to get the degree she really wanted. At the start of the fourth season, Whitley became interested in Dwayne to the point where she schemed many times to get Kinu, Dwayne's girlfriend at the time, to break up with him. Soon, Dwayne realized that he had unbearable feelings for Whitley. When the fourth season ended, Whitley and Dwayne tried to have sex, but an AIDS positive person persuaded them not to. Soon, Dwayne proposed to Whitley and she accepted. Also, Whitley bcame the new dorm director in Height Hall. Whitley began to put much pressure on Dwayne. Dwayne went out with another woman for coffee. When he told her, Whitley broke the engagement. Dwayne and Whitley became mean to each other. Whitley got a job selling art. She was sexually harrassed by her boss. Then she filed a complaint against him. Also Whitley befriended a criminal. Later, Whitley started going out with Bryon Douglass. Dwayne became very jealous. Whitley decided to clear the air with Dwayne. As they tried, they had a fight,and ended up sleeping together. Whitley confessed to Byron and they became an official couple. Byron proposed to Whitley. At the wedding, Whitley broke up with Byron and married Dwayne. During their honeymoon, they were in the Los Angeles riots
