White Jazz is a novel by James Ellroy, an American crime fiction writer. It is the fourth in his L.A. quartet, preceded by The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere and L.A. Confidential.

The book circles around the daily work of Lieutenant David "Dave" Klein and his involvement with the dark side of the LAPD.

  • The novel was set to be adapted into a movie starring Nick Nolte as David "Dave" Klein, and John Cusack as Junior Stemmons. The screenplay was written by the novel's author himself, James Ellroy. The film has consistently been in development hell with rumors regularly circulating regarding the project, such as Winona Ryder being up for a part in the film.
  • On 30 November 2006, Variety reported that George Clooney is set to star in a newly green-lighted film adaptation of the novel for Warner Independent Pictures.[1] He is also on board as producer along with his Smoke House partner Grant Heslov. The film, written by screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan and directed by his brother Joe Carnahan, is scheduled for an early 2008 production start date.
  • The name Van Meter, a prominent character in the novel, was also used for the Brendan Gleeson character in the film Dark Blue, the story for which was also written by James Ellroy.
