Werther's Original

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werther's Original is a brand of caramel candies owned by the German company August Storck KG, based in Berlin, Germany. The candy brand is named after the village of Werther in Westphalia, where the company was founded in 1903. Originally available only in the hard form, candies are now also available in a chewy, soft form as well. There is also a sugarfree variant.

TV advertisements in Germany and the UK from around 10 years ago featured a kindly-looking moustachioed old man offering Werthers butterscotch toffee to his grandson. In what's now become commonplace, these were shot in what's termed 'limited palette' to reflect the product brand and suggested a halcyon age of innocence, nuclear families and good old fashioned sweets. The grandfather in the first UK ads spoke with an American accent, and was later localised to Received Pronunciation.
