Water of Life (Dune)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Water of Life is a fictional drug from Frank Herbert's science fiction novel Dune.

It is categorized as an illuminating poison, or an awareness spectrum narcotic. Specifically, it is the liquid exhalation of a sandworm produced at the moment of its death from drowning, which is changed within the body of a Reverend Mother to become the narcotic used in the Sietch orgy. It is found on planet Arrakis.

The Bene Gesserit test their acolytes to see if they can be Reverend Mothers by feeding them the Water of Life. If they are Reverend Mothers, they transmute the poison safely within. Paul uses the Water of Life to fulfill his destiny as the Kwisatz Haderach.
