Wassoulou

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wassoulou is a region in Mali, close to the border with Guinea. Places in the region include Yanfolila. The region is the origin of Wassoulou music.

Wassoulou is also the name of an empire, founded in the region in the 1870s by Samori Ture around his capital of Bissandugu. Following a series of military setbacks, it was extinguished by the French colonial army by 1898.
