Warheads (confectionery)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Warheads are fruit-flavored hard candies that have a unique, very sour layer on the outside. Upon consumption, the intense sour taste (produced by malic acid) lasts up to 60 seconds, after which the exposed interior of candy gives a sweet taste. Introduced in Taiwan under another name in 1975, Warheads were first imported to the United States by The Foreign Candy Company in the mid 1980's and marketed as "Mega Warheads". Warheads come in a variety of basic flavors, including apple, lemon, black cherry, blue raspberry, and watermelon.
Warheads are a popular form of childhood betting bravado. Seeing who could keep the most in their mouth at once has long been a popular hobby of many young children. Some schools have banned the candies because of this. [citation needed]
Eating multiple pieces of the candy in a short period can cause temporary irritation of sensitive tongues and mouths.
Hot-tasting flavors, such as spicy cherry, grape and orange featured a capsicum-laced layer on the outside. Although they are no longer manufactured, some overstock remains in existence and can sometimes be found for sale through eBay and other mediums.
The candy is made in Taiwan/China and distributed by Impact Confections of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
