Warhammer Monthly

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warhammer Monthly was a comic book published by Games Workshop's publishing arm, The Black Library, from March 1998 to December 2004, running to 86 issues in total. The final two issues were published bi-monthly under the name Warhammer Comic. It featured stories set within the science fiction and fantasy worlds that provide the settings for Games Workshop's tabletop wargames Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000, amongst others.

The comic used an anthology format, usually featuring three or four stories each of seven to eight pages in length. The stories in Warhammer Monthly were usually serialised, and would run for several months. The most popular stories returned for more series, and were often collected in trade paperback form.

The April, 2003 issue of the comic was called Warhammer Warped Visions, which featured a number of one-shot variations of their more popular comics, only their settings were switched between the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 universes. For example, the Dark Elf Malus Darkblade was portrayed as a Dark Eldar, while the Titan Imperius Dictatio was shown as an Empire Steam Tank.

Warhammer Monthly was cancelled after issue 86 as sales were poor in comparison to the numerous novels Black Library were producing.

A new Warhammer 40,000 comic, written by Warhammer Monthly stalwart Dan Abnett, is due for release by Boom! Studios in October 2006. It seems that this title will not follow the anthology format of Warhammer Monthly, instead containing a single story, and is being produced without the direct involvement of either Games Workshop or the Black Library[1][2].
