Walter Jones (Virginia)

Walter Jones (December 18, 1745 – December 31, 1815) was an American physician and politician from the state of Virginia who served in the United States House of Representatives.

Born in Williamsburg, Virginia he graduated from William and Mary College, in Williamsburg in 1760. He studied medicine in Edinburgh and received the degree of doctor of medicine in 1770.

Jones returned to Virginia and located in Northumberland County where he became Physician General of the Middle Military Department in 1777. He became a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1785–1787, and a Delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1788. He was elected as a Republican at-large member of Fifth United States Congress from March 4, 1797 to March 3, 1799. He became a member of the house of delegates again in 1802 and 1803, and was then elected to the Eighth, Ninth Tenth, and Eleventh Congresses, serving from March 4, 1803 to March 3, 1811.

Walter Jones died in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and was interred in the family burial ground at "Hayfield", a few miles from Callo, Northumberland County, Virginia.
