Walrein (トドゼルガ Todozeruga ?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon Franchise - a series of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri.

Its name is a combination of "walrus" and "rein" ("bridle", or "control", which it does as the supreme member of its herd). The "rein" may also be play on the word "reign", suggesting its status as the king of the sea lions. "Rein" might also refer to "rain", representing its connection to water.

[edit] Appearance/Biology

Walrein is a large, blubbery, and tusked mammalian Pokémon much like the real world Walrus. However, it has a bold blue body and a white puffy mane resembling sea foam but not actually made out of it.

Walrein is among the few fully-evolved Pokémon that live in functional communities, down in glacial environments, made of members of its pre-evolved forms Spheal and Sealeo as well as itself. As one would expect, the Walrein are the dominant members of their society, protecting their groups from attackers with their large strong tusks (though they can break off in battle, but Walrein is willing to make that sacrifice and even give its life to protect the herd). These tusks are strong enough to thoroughly shatter blocks of ice weighing ten tons.

When alone in the arctic seas, Walrein’s thick blubber insulates it from the extreme cold of sub-zero temperature water, and it uses its tusks to clear its way as it swims through ice floes. The blubber is also resilient enough to make enemy attacks such as bites bounce off relatively harmlessly.

[edit] In the video games

It is an Ice/Water Pokémon; evolving from Sealeo at level 44. Walrein is available in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Generally, Walrein is a somewhat underused Pokémon. It is often compared to fellow Ice/Water-type sea lion Pokémon Dewgong for battling prowess, and it succeeds in having slightly improved stats everywhere except for slightly decreased speed. Like Dewgong, Walrein does not have a very good movepool, generally focusing mostly on Water and Ice-type moves. Some trainers prefer to use Dewgong over Walrein because it has the bug-type attack Signal Beam. However, in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Walrein can also learn the move Signal Beam as an egg move by breeding with a Dewgong. Instead of Signal Beam in the GBA games however, Walrein has the move Earthquake (note: in Diamond/ Pearl, Signal Beam does not replace Earthquake as one of its moves, but rather it can learn both of them.) and Ice Ball (a move identical to the rock-type Rollout, including its power-boost combo with Walrein’s Defense Curl, except that it is ice-type) is one of its signature moves. A moveset common to Walrein generally focuses on reliance on Sheer Cold to knock out the opposition without effort. A moveset for the people that don't like one hit-KO's due to the lack of accuracy is, Mimic, Ice beam, Water Pulse and Body Slam, this focuses mainly on Walrein's Defense and HP stats and Quick claw could help its low Speed.

Another Pokémon compared to Walrein for battling is Lapras, a Pokémon that has very similar stats (that seem to trade more speed for more hit points) but, instead of Earthquake, can be taught Thunderbolt.

Glacia of the Elite Four uses a level 53 female Walrein with Blizzard and Sheer Cold, the strongest of the ice-type attacks. It can be quite hard to take down for some pokémon trainers.

It is interesting to note that, despite its Pokedex entry saying it smashes large ice blocks with its teeth, Walrein cannot learn the moves Bite, Crunch, and Brick Break, though this may be amended in future games.

[edit] In the animé

In the episode "Training Wrecks", Rocky, the leader of the trainers of Muscle Island, battles Ash, Pikachu and Grovyle with a Walrein and a Quagsuire. In the episode Fight for the Meteorite, Team Aqua uses Walrein in their battles against Team Magma.

In the seventh movie Destiny Deoxys when Tory as a younger boy, is in the Arctic at the beginning of the movie, when Deoxys and the "rock" it's in impacts with the earth, it scares a bunch of Spheal, Sealeo, and Walrein into causing a stampede. In fact, this stampede causes Tory who is caught in the stampede (compare with Simba from The Lion King, which incidentally was released by Disney, who released Destiny Deoxys outside Japan through its Miramax division) traumatizes Tory so much that Tory's afraid of Pokémon through out the movie, but Ash manages to rid Tory of his fear later on.

Walrein has made three appearances so far in card format, all as Stage 2 Water-types:
