The University of Virginia's College at Wise, commonly called UVa-Wise, is a public liberal arts college located in Wise, Virginia. It is the only branch of the University of Virginia, and the westernmost public college in Virginia.[1]
[edit] History
The University of Virginia's College at Wise was founded by The University of Virginia in 1954 as Clinch Valley College, a two-year institution of higher education. In June 1970, the school began to grant four-year baccalaureate degrees. Since that time, UVa-Wise has granted about 6,000 baccalaureate degrees. [2]
In 1999, Clinch Valley College was renamed to The University of Virginia's College at Wise by Virginia's General Assembly following a prior effort to change the institution's name on July 1, 1991. [3]
The College offers 25 majors, 27 minors and 23 teaching specialities. As of September 2006, the College's enrollment is near 1,820 students. [4] UVa-Wise is undergoing rapid growth, with several new buildings and campus beautification projects underway.[citation needed] The college board has expressed the desire to see the college grow to between 3,500 and 5,000 students by 2015.[citation needed]
[edit] Athletics
In athletics, the school competes on the NAIA level in the Mid-South Conference and its teams are known as the Highland Cavaliers.[citation needed] Long-term goals as the school grows might include moving to the NCAA Division II level and also adding other sports, such as lacrosse.[citation needed] Students and alumni are encouraged to consider themselves as a part of the University of Virginia community and follow the Virginia Cavaliers athletic teams as well.[citation needed]
The Cavalier football team is currently ranked within the top 25 schools in the NAIA and ranks #1 in total offense in all of NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).
