Queer people of color
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Queer people of color (sometimes abbreviated as QPOC) is a term that describes non-white sexual minorities.
[edit] Media
Fusion, the first QPOC film festival, founded by HBO in Los Angeles, is an extension of OUTFEST. Fusion's website states the festival "protects our past, showcases our present and nurtures our future by fostering artistic expression of gender, sexuality and LGBTQ culture and its transformative social impact on the world." [1] It features shorts dating back to the early 1980s. Incorporated in the festival are workshops, music, live performance art, poetry, and a panel discussion aimed at providing dialogue centered on the media and its role in LGBT communities of color, as well as empowering QPOC filmmakers to obtain funding and to produce their works.
[edit] Organizations
- A Texas-based activist organization named ALLGO, founded in 1985, became the first statewide QPOC organization creating a support network among students, activists, organizations and allies.
- The Audre Lorde Project in New York City also has the same function.
