Queen Elizabeth's Hospital (more commonly known as QEH) is an independent school for boys in Clifton, Bristol, England. Stephen Holliday has served as Headmaster since the year 2000. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the School's Patron though the QEH is named after its original Patron Queen Elizabeth I.

Queen Elizabeth's Hospital was founded in 1590 by the affluent merchant John Carr as a school for orphans and destitute children in Bristol. It is modelled on Christ's Hospital, at that time located in London and to this day shares the same distinctive Tudor blue coat uniform - though currently the uniform is only worn by boarders and choir members on special occasions.

The school is located in the heart of Bristol in an imposing building built of Brandon stone. It dates from 1847 and is adjacent to Cabot Tower. It is a fairly small school of some 560 boys, a small proportion of whom are full-time boarders, and is now Bristol's only all-boys school.

Other projects include the building of a new state-of-the-art sixth form centre which should be ready for 2006.

The school's yard is a listed structure, owing to the complex nature of the tiling involved in construction. It is one of the largest tiled surfaces in Europe, and by extension, globally. The buildings surrounding it were owned by Bristol Grammar School during the first half of the 19th Century, but were purchased when QEH moved from the original site at which it had remained since foundation.

The school also has an up-to-date ICT suite which allows boys access to the internet from within school and to certain programs that are less likely to be found on home computers, such as Visual Basic, as well as standard programs. Most departments are supported by computer programs. Boys can log onto the school server through a link on the school website.

The school library, contains in excess of ten thousand items, spanning across fiction and non-fiction. The library also takes thirty five periodicals, including magazines and national newspapers, in English, as well as French, Spanish and German, which are the three modern foreign languages offered to the boys for curricular study.

The school is currently phasing out its boarding facilities, due to lack of demand. Boarding will officially close at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year. As a new sixth form centre is being created, the school decided to create several new teaching rooms in place of the original, housing the geography department.

In Years 7 & 8 biology, chemistry and physics are studied collectively as 'Science'. From Year 9 onwards they are taught as separate subjects by subject specialists, whether or not boys study separate science at GCSE, until boys choose to give them up.

At the end of Year 7 boys will choose to study one of either Spanish or German in Year 8.

Boys are set according to ability in maths from the second term of year 7 until they finish in either Year 11, Year 12 or Year 13.

In Year 9 five subjects must be chosen to complete the boys' timetable. If Ancient Greek is chosen it must be studied in unison with Latin, making this two choices.

Though Ancient Greek is only mentioned as being a curricular subject in Year 9, it can be studied extra-curricularly in boys own time, i.e. lunchtime, in Years 10 & 11, leading to a GCSE and also over Year 12 and Year 13, leading to AS level.

At GCSE science can either be studied as dual award or separate science. Boys studying dual award will only receive two GCSEs of the same grade at the end of the course, whereas those opting for separate science will achieve three GCSEs of the appropriate grade for each science. If separate science is chosen then there will also be an option for an arts based short course.

Boys must take at least one modern foreign language as one of their GCSE options.

N.B. ICT when studied at GCSE leads to an AS Level and when studied at AS level leads to an A level.

At AS level boys will normally study four subjects, however it is possible to study more or less depending on the boy's academic ability. Upon entry to A level it is customary to discontinue study of one of these subjects.

Further Maths cannot be studied on its own and must be studied in conjunction with maths, therefore making it a choice that will take up two options at either AS or A level.

In Years 7, 8, 9, & 10 the school holds internal exams for the boys, in order to give them preapation for GCSE & A level. The exams are all held in one week and are as close to external exams as possible, e.g. modern languages have four compenents an oral, listening, reading, and writing exam.

[edit] QEH Theatre

Since opening in 1990 the QEH Theatre has hosted many productions both by QEH pupils and professional companies performing plays, dance and poetry. Open to the public, it seats 220 and is known in Bristol for its diverse programme. The theatre is used for performances open to the general public and as a way of broadening the pupils' learning by viewing historical and foreign language plays offered by the school.

The QEH Theatre is temporarily closed to outside companies pending the completion of a new Sixth Form building close-by (mainly for access and health and safety reasons). When work is complete at the end of November 2006 - delayed due to unforeseen problems, specifically the discovery of damp - it will return to full use, refurbished.
