[edit] Requesting comments on template alteration

Hello. I see you are using one or more of the User instruments templates in your Babel box. Inspired by some recent developments, I want to rework all the templates in there (including ones used on user pages), to make them more like the regular Babel templates. [edit] Template on Newcomers Help Desk

Hello! I was wondering - you've been very efficient at copying questions to the Ref Desk when they needed to be. If your standard response ("Your factual question has been moved to the reference desk and is available here.") a template, or are you just typing it in manually?

I usually type it manually the first time then just paste it, there usually aren't as many as there were today and I was actually thinking about making it a template, haha. Do you think that's a good way to handle those questions? I'm not really that familiar with the reference desk culture so I was somewhat concerned they would think we were dumping questions... I don't think we really need a template for this - after all, it's just a line of text with two links in it, it's just as fast to cut-and-paste (or even just type!) a response. As for 'dumping' questions on the Reference Desk, I've been hanging out there for a bit and I don't think it's ever been seen as a problem. Other users do the same by bringing over questions asked at the Help desk or from the Wikipedia mailing list. So I see no reason to stop! :)

Update: I just found a template from the help desk (Template:RD) which points the person asking the question to the ref desk so they can ask it again. IMO, what you've been doing (copying the question itself, as opposed to just pointing the user at the RD), even though it involves a bit more work, is far more constructive, and I think it's great that you go the 'extra mile'. Yeah, that's good to hear about the ref desk people being ok with it :) . I think that template might be a little rough for some of the newcomers, I sometimes worry the idea of their question being moved and answered on another page might be a usability issue, having them pick the category and rewrite it I think would almost never happen. :) - cohesion★talk 10:27, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I have tried both Radar and radar but neither works for me. When I previewed this entry just now, the heading appears in blue, but when I click on it, it tells me that an article does not exist. Am I losing my metaphorical marbles already, or is there something wrong? 16:20, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

This is very odd indeed. I tried looking at it with both Internet Explorer and Firefox. Neither worked. I then took up its suggestion and tried creating an article called History of radar. The edit page appeared with the full article in it. I saved the article and it now works fine. Thanks but I am puzzled even so. Ever see the Twilight Zone? JMcC 18:37, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

I want you to know that I wasn't reverting your edit to RD:Science. After your comment on Pluto (according to the edit summary), the page went missing. The history was still there, but clicking on your edit came up with a "page not in database" error. I clicked on the previous edit and it came up. i've noticed you've removed a link to the Teamsters from the article on location managers.

they are the duly elected representatives and labor organization of location managers on the west coast and as such, a useful link in the article.

i've looked over the Wikipedia:List of policies and don't see any reason why they shouldn't be mentioned.

The relevant policy is Wikipedia:External links - specifically, the way I read it, external links should bring additional information on the subject. Having (briefly) browsed through the Teamster's website, they only bring information about themselves (who they are, what they bring to members...), not information about location management itself. Also, the Teamster's Union is a bit too localised for my tastes - if it was an organisation spanning all of the US (or maybe even across the Atlantic or south of the border?), it would suit the purposes of Wikipedia, which is a worldwide information source, much better. So, my view would still be that it should be removed, noble as the Teamsters surely are.

However, rather than doing this unilaterally, I wanted to check back with you first. Let me know what you think. And I just wanted to say that I appreciate that you sent me a message about this rather than unilaterally reverting my changes! :) — QuantumEleven | (talk) 06:53, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

i may not submit very often but at least i like to communicate with those that do when they critique my pages...i know the teamsters are a bit of a strange bedfellow for location managers but considering that the majority of the working feature location professionals are based out of hollywood and consequently, associated with the teamsters, i thought it was pertinent. the motion picture division is mentioned in the main Teamsters article and that article is mentioned in the Location manager article so it is my belief that you might as well cut out the middle man and jump straight to the parent organization but i'll submit to your judgement if you feel strongly about it. QE, your excellent answer to this poor person was slightly marred by the link to Samaritans going to the ancient civilization page - not the suicide prevention org, who don't appear to have a page. hello

you've removed the "wikipedia links" I've added to the Johnny Hallyday page.

1. As he is french, I think it is usefull to have a link to the french side of wiki (I also add a cross link from the french page to the english page)
2. you should remove the link to the english wiki site from the FR site and the DE site, else there are dead links...
3. why do you say it is not necessary? wikipedia he there to use ALL informations on one subject; why remove link to other langage?

Hi there! I fully agree that we should have links between different language Wikipedias - but that's what the "in other languages" (autres langues) sidebar is for. If you type [[fr:Johnny Halliday]], it's a link that goes into the language sidebar, if you type [[:fr:Johnny Halliday]], it goes into the main text. That's why I removed the in-text links, as the sidebar links were already there. — QuantumEleven 10:45, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

I am trying to understand why there are so few Wikipedians who are graduate engineers. Once I get a grasp on that, perhaps I may be able to formulate some ideas on how to attract more experienced engineers to become Wikipedians. It would be very helpful if you would respond to these a few questions:

[edit] Downloading Wikipedia

Hi QuantumEleven,

I had read a Make DIY magazine article from august 2005 that gave step-by-step instructions on how to make a portable encyclopedia using wikipedia and something like a palm pilot. The article is in depth on how to modify the electronic device,(how to add more memory, what software you need to tranfer files from your computer, etc), but it just glosses over how to download wikipedia, basically saying "then i downloaded wikipedia". The article had mentioned MySQL, and Apache but didn't give any details about them. From the wikipedia database download page it mentioned that SQL would no longer be supported, I went to Apache where they have tons of programs and code available to download but i have no idea what any of it does, or what specific program i need. Would MediaWiki work for something like that?

Any additional information you have about this would be great.

Sorry the only reason I knew that there was spinach related information in the archives of the reference desk is thanks to my prodigious memory or perhaps tradgic lack of anything else to remember. I agree it was basly written- that was a couple of paragraphs lifted from Cannabis Health, so I re-wrote it and added another reference (it was also reported in Forbes, the NY Times etc.) to make it a lot more clear. It really was a corporation, we really did have a patent, we nearly moved cannabis into Sched. 2 as the source of a legal pharmaceutical, and every time I go to my Harvard Business School reunions it's "Hey, McKinney, what's happening to our Pot Stock!" Somehow I get blocked from the actual discussion board by someone named Mango .. but if you want a copy of one of our annual reports, just drop and e-mail to me at IvyEmporiums@aol.com ...
