Quarter Midget racing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quarter Midget racing is a sport similar to Go-Karting. It is played by younger people, typically from age 5 to 16. Racing, which can be playful or competitive, is carried out in quarter-scale Midget cars. Tracks are typically banked ovals one-twentieth of a mile long and are made of dirt, concrete, and asphalt. Quarter midget racing differs frp, "Go Karting" in as much as it is always done on an oval track, often 1/20th mile in length, rather than the "road circuit" style track used in go-kart racing. The cars themselves are not 1/4 the size of full size midget race cars. The term 1/4 midget originally referred to the fact that the size of the track used, (1/20th mile), was 1/4 the length of the 1/4 mile track often used by "Full Midgets" during the 1940's, and as a result, the speeds reached by the child-driven 1/4 midget was also about 1/4 of the speed of a full sized adult midget. A 1/4 midget is far larger than 1/4 the length of a full midget. The "Half" midget, is a quarter midget chasis with engine sizes usually betwwen 200 and 251cc and can be modified to liking of driver, but runs on the same size track.
