Philippine Science High School Central Mindanao Campus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philippine Science High School - Central Mindanao Campus is one of the eight PSHS campuses. It started full operation on June 1998 where it was situated in Maranding, Lala, Lanao del Norte. Due to the lack of school infrastructure, the school was forced to borrow rooms from Maranding's elementary public school to be able to set up its offices and facilities. Due to the growing school population, it moved to Mindanao Civic Center to accommodate its needs. However, this is only temporary until the proper campus is finished—construction was delayed due to late release of government budget—which is situated in Baloi, Lanao Del Norte. The school accommodates all high-school students from Mindanao, mainly those of the northern Mindanao region. The school is situated far away from major cities, and students who come from these major cities stay at boarding houses and accommodation or in the school dormitory itself.

Students refer to themselves as PhiSchiers or Pisayans as it is usually termed. The school's name itself is shortened to pisay.

[edit] Admissions process

Admission to the PSHS System is through the PSHS System National Competitive Examination (PSHS-NCE). It is a two-step screening given to all qualified elementary students. To be eligible for admission, applicants must be Filipino students who must belong to the top 10% of the graduating class or must have special aptitude in science and math.

The first screening is the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). It consists of tests in Verbal, Abstract Reasoning and Mathematics. The second screening is the Science Math Aptitude Test (SMAT) consisting of tests in Science and Mathematics. Examinations are held during the first part of the school year.

[edit] Academic program

The Philippine Science High School has a core curriculum which aims to develop the scholar in all disciplines. Students experience a common freshman year, with a demanding English and Mathematics curriculum, and exposure to Earth Science and Technology Preparation. The students then go through a process that allows them to follow either a science stream or a technology stream.

The streaming courses are given through electives in the second through fourth year. The core courses are taken by all students.

[edit] Core curriculum

The core curriculum is packed with science and mathematics courses, allowing the student to maximize their potential intellectual skills. This is balanced by humanities course offerings, which foster the full growth of each individual personality.

The science and mathematics subjects are generally advanced. Each year, starting in the second year, the students take Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as separate subjects. Computer Science is offered in all year levels.

Science and Technology Stream Courses

After a common first year curriculum, second year PSHS students are grouped into the science and technology streams. At this level, each group is offered specialized courses or electives wherein they deepen their knowledge in particular topics of interest. Examples of electives integrated in the science stream curriculum are Consumer and Industrial Chemistry. Computer Networking and Advanced Electronics form part of the technology stream curriculum.
