Philippine Basketball Association Most Valuable Player award

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) awards the Most Valuable Player award (MVP) at the end of the season. The winner is selected via votes from the press, players, coaches and top PBA officials.

Note that from 1975 to 2003, PBA seasons have three tournaments (or conferences), so the regular NBA application of having a regular season MVP and a Finals MVP and the meaning of "conference" doesn't apply here. The season MVP is for the whole season, including the regular season, the playoffs and the Finals of each Conference, although there is a Best Player of the Conference award for each conference, and a Best Import award for conferences where imports are allowed play.

Starting at 2004, instead of having a year long season (February to December, with a month's break in-between conferences), the season was reformated so that there would be two conferences (tournaments) from October to June.

The winner is selected by the following format:

  • 30% statistical points (points, rebounds, assists, blocks, turnovers etc.)
  • 30% players' votes
  • 30% press and media votes
  • 10% from the four-man MVP committee (includes the league commissioner)

MVP voting begins at the start of the Finals series of the last conference. All statisitical points gathered from all levels of competition (elimination/classification round and playoffs) are included.
