[edit] Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Isla Cruces is the island where Davy Jones buried the Dead Man's Chest that contains his beating heart. The once-inhabitated island appears to have been abandoned. It is unknown who the previous occupants were, but judging by the partially-remaining stone buildings, some type of European colony (probably Spanish) was once established here. A church ruin provides the backdrop for a duel between Jack Sparrow, James Norrington, and Will Turner.
Why Davy Jones chose Isla Cruces to bury the Dead Man's Chest is not revealed. However, according to the film's writers, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio in the POC: Dead Man's Chest DVD audio commentary, Isla Cruces was a plague island, and that is why it remains deserted. This is probably the reason Jones buried the chest there.
Whoever possesses the heart, controls Davy Jones and in turn, all the world's oceans. Hoping to claim it to release himself from Davy Jones's blood debt, Captain Jack Sparrow arrives at the island on the Black Pearl. Also wanting it are Will Turner, who hopes to free his father from eternal servitude to Jones, and ex-Commodore James Norrington, who is plotting to bargain back his career. All three engage in a battle with one another for possession of it.
Meanwhile, the Flying Dutchman has arrived, and Davy Jones sends his crew to retrieve the chest. Hadras, a crew member on the Dutchman finds the chest, but after knocking his detachable head off with a coconut, Jack takes it from him. Opening the chest, he finds the beating heart within.
While the Dutchman's sailors battle Jack and his crew on the beach, Norrington steals the heart and escapes. He is found adrift by an East India Trading Company ship. Back in Port Royal, he presents the heart to Lord Cutler Beckett, who now controls the seas.
