Investigative Reporters and Editors

Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the quality of investigative reporting. Formed in 1975, it is best known for the IRE Awards, which, within the journalism industry, are considered to be the highest award that is attainable, short of an actual Pulitzer Prize.

The award has categories in all different media:

  • Circulation between 100,000 and 250,000
  • Circulation between 250,000 and 500,000
  • Circulation more than 500,000 (or wire service entry)

• Special Categories
  • Tom Renner Award: For the best investigative reporting about organized crime or other criminal acts
  • IRE FOI Award: Honors an individual or organization whose significant actions furthered open records or open government
  • Student Award: Outstanding investigative reporting by a student
