[edit] Battle for Kannauj
Immediately after coming to power, Indra III had to fight the Paramara ruler, a feudatory of Gurjara Prathihara and routed him out of Govardhana near Nasik. The Prathihara ruler Mahipala I of Kannauj also was defeated and had to accept the Rashtrakuta overlordship thereafter. The Cambay plates proves that in 914 Indra crossed the Jamuna River and captured Kannauj when two sons of Mehendrapala of Pala Dynasty were having internal fueds. From the writings of Kannada Adikavi Pampa it is known that Indra sent his feudatory, Chalukya king Narasimha of Vemulavada (Andhra region) in persuit of Mahipala I who fled the area. According to Dr. Altekar, the northern campaign of Indra III produced more dramatic results then during the rule of Dhruva Dharavarsha and Govinda III as the Rashtrakutas were actually able to hold Kannauj until 916.
[edit] Trouble in Vengi
A civil war like situation prevailed in Vengi after the defeat of Eastern Chalukya Bhima at the hands of Baddega, a Rashtrakuta feudatory ruler from Vemulavada. Indra's Jaina general ShriVijaya who was also a poet, won may wars for his king in the eastern Deccan and the bulk of Vengi was brought under the rule of Indra III for a few years.
Indra III died in 929
