Indian Astronomical Observatory stands on a peak in the western Himalayas near the village of Hanle, India, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Located at and 4,500 m (14,764 feet), it has the highest telescope in the world. Before it became operational in 2001, the highest telescope was at the Meyer-Womble Observatory.
