Following their review of parliamentary representation in South London, the 1997 Boundary Commission for England created this constituency by merging most of Dulwich with the northern part of Norwood constituency

The electoral wards used in the creation of this seat are:

• Coldharbour, Gipsy Hill, Herne Hill, Knight’s Hill and Thurlow Park from London Borough of Lambeth
• College, East Dulwich and Village from London Borough of Southwark.
