Dragsholm municipality

Dragsholm municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in West Zealand County on the northwest coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark, in a region known as Lammefjord, named after the inlet to the east of the municipality . The municipality covers an area of 152 km², and has a total population of 13,820 (2005). Its mayor is Finn Madsen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The site of its municipal council is the town of Fårevejle Stationsby. Asnæs is the biggest town in the municipality, and that second biggest is Hørve. Other towns include Hørve, Fårevejle Kirkeby, Grevinge og Høve.

Neighboring municipalities are Trundholm to the north and Bjergsted, Svinninge, and Holbæk to the south. To the east is Lammefjord, an extension of the larger Isefjord. To the west is Sejerø Bay (Sejerø Bugt) to the north, and Nekselø Bay (Nekselø Bugt) to the south, and beyond these the Kattegat. The island of Sejerø lies off its western coast in Sejerø Bay, and the island of Nekselø lies in Nekselø Bay. Both of these islands belong to southern municipal neighbour Bjergsted.

The area is a popular summer home and beach area. Many people travel through the municipality on their way to Zealand's Point (Sjællands Odde), a long spit of land north of the municipality from where ferry service via Mols-linien connects Zealand to the Danish mainland, the Jutland peninsula, at Århus and Ebeltoft.

By January 1, 2007 Dragsholm municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Nykøbing-Rørvig and Trundholm municipalities to form the new Odsherred municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 355 km² and a total population of 32,739 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
