Thorny catfishes or talking catfishes are a family, Doradidae, of catfishes native to South America. There are approximately 35 genera and 90 species.[2]
Typical features of the family are a row of armoured plates laterally along the body (known as scutes) often with spike like extensions along the center of the plates, three pairs of barbels, no nasal barbels, and 4–6 rays on the dorsal fin with a spine on the anterior (first) ray. The adipose fin is usually present.
