The construction of Dong Hoi Airport was started in September 2004 and is due to be completed by the end of 2006. The site of the airport was formerly a French military unpaved airbase used from 1930 to 1954 to attack Viet Minh in the Middle of Vietnam and Loatian military Pathet in Southern Laos. During the Vietnam War, this unpaved airbase was used by the air force of North Vietnam.

[edit] Facilities

Upon completion in 2006, Dong Hoi Airport will have one concrete paved runway (2,400 m x 45 m), ranked 4D according to ICAO, a two-story terminal capable of processing 300 passengers/peak hour and is able to handle midium range aircraft like A320, A321 or equivalent, apron for 2 Airbus 320 and Aribus 321s or equivalent, an air traffic control tower and six check-in counters and security equipment. The estimated cost to build the airport is $15 million invested by the Northern Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

[edit] Airlines and Destinations

The airport will serve Dong Hoi city and nearby Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park- a World Natural Heritage. Vietnam Airlines will provide non-stop flights linking this airport with Noi Bai (Ha Noi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh city) in December 2006. It will serve mainly tourists to beautiful beaches in Dong Hoi city and World Natural Heritage of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, the starting point of The Middle World Heritage Road.

[edit] Future Destinations

After 2010, Vietnam Airlines will open flights linking this airport with Cat Bi airport (Hai Phong), Cam Ranh airport (Nha Trang) and the World Cultural Heritage of Luang Prabang (Laos) and Chiangmai (Thailand).
