Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (also known as Mortal Kombat: The Animated Series) is an animated series based on the popular Mortal Kombat fighting game series. It aired on the USA Network's Action Extreme Team animation block for one season of 13 episodes from September to December of 1996.

[edit] Storyline

The characters and their backstories are mostly continuous with the movies Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, although there are some minor differences. This includes what the characters looked like in Mortal Kombat 3 the arcade game. The series takes place after the events of the first movie and the plot has very little to do with the plot of any of the games. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the show was that it provided the debut appearance of Quan Chi, a key character in the MK series who was the villain of Mortal Kombat 4 and part of the Deadly Alliance.

The show was focused on a group of warriors assembled by Raiden to defend Earthrealm from invaders from various other dimensions that entered through portals. The assembled warriors included Liu Kang, Kurtis Stryker, Sonya Blade, Jax, Kitana, and Sub-Zero, with Nightwolf functioning mostly as tech support. The warriors operated out of a hidden base from where Nightwolf and Raiden monitored portal openings; the warriors would fly dragon-shaped jets to deal with disturbances. Shao Kahn was something of an arch-villain throughout the series, being responsible for allowing other realms to invade Earthrealm. The finale involved Kitana leading a rebellion from Outworld against her foster father, Shao Kahn.

It is Nightwolf who destroys the evil crystal and ruins Quan Chi's black magic.

[edit] Episode 9: Resurrection

Thus, he is the one who has to decide the fate of the world. But good, even though it grew weak, is stronger than the evil even when strengthened with the forces of magic. Having defeated Shang Tsung, Raiden sends the sphere to Netherealm.

Jax, who didn't expect any danger, now finds himself captured by Ermac's forces and is imprisoned in a cave under Shao Kahn's castle, where he was put for torture. Luckily, his friends know about these events and go out to help him. But the Earth Warriors are outnumbered by Shao Kahn's troops and are surrounded. Jax realizes that a peaceful life is impossible while the Earth is exposed to danger from another realm and returns to the team.

Kitana reached an agreement with Sheeva's Warriors, but she doesn't know that she is in fact the cruel Shang Tsung who transformed to look like Sheeva. The good forces break into Shao Kahn's castle and demand that Shao Kahn hands over his rule to the princess. Suddenly Shang Tsung appears with the warriors of the real Sheeva. The magician is also after the rule. But Tsung forgets one thing; Sheeva has enemies within the outworld forces. Raiden finds out Shang Tsung's plan and disrupts the fight. The god of thunder brings with him the worst enemy of Sheeva, Motaro's squad. Mortal Kombat continues, but the insurrection failed and The Earth is still in danger.

[edit] Trivia

  • Defenders was produced by Threshold Entertainment, who also worked on the first two movies.
  • USA Network aired episodes of Defenders back-to-back with those of the Street Fighter animated series. Ironically, twice the amount of episodes (26) were produced for Street Fighter.
  • Jax actually removes his metal implants in one episode ("Acid Tongue"), thus dispelling the notion for many fans that they were permanently attached.
  • Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke, Rain, Kabal and Ermac all appear unmasked in different episodes, but their human descriptions therein, except for Kabal, are not canon:
    • Cyrax is portrayed as Asian, while the game canon has confirmed since Mortal Kombat Gold that he is actually of African-descent.
    • In contrast, Sektor is indeed portrayed as an African with dreadlocks, even though his unmasked looks are not known.
    • Smoke and Ermac have never been seen unmasked canonwise; in the animation, though, Smoke appears to be Asian and Ermac as a redhead, with a goatee and a earring.
    • Rain's face is also not known, though only from the nose down, as this part always appears covered by a mask. His skin and hair color, though, are correct, even though Rain ties his hair (longer than what it appears in the cartoon) in a ponytail instead of parting it to the sides, as seen in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
  • The series also featured the debut of the newly retconned Kano. His nationality was changed from American to Australian following actor Trevor Goddard's performance in the first movie.
  • The sphere seen in the episode 'Resurrection' tied into a crossover with episodes of the Street Fighter, Wing Commander Academy, and Savage Dragon series where the sphere would move from one world to the next, stirring up havoc in the process.
  • Although the games are rated M for Mature, this cartoon series is aimed at a younger audience.
  • Kung Lao Johnny Cage Noob Saibot and Kintaro were not shown or referenced in the show at all.
  • In the first episode of the series, Karbrak, who was mentioned by Jax to be the new leader of the nomads, is said to be Baraka's name unscrambled except an extra "K" was added to the alias.
  • In the episode of "Acid Tongue" Reptile's other alias is Komodai.
  • Elements of the first Mortal Kombat movie were used in a few flashback scenes in 3 episodes such as Sub-Zero's defeat at the hands of Liu Kang during the Mortal Kombat tournament and Liu Kang's victory over Shang Tsung and the Mortal Kombat tournament.
