IMDb profile

Evangelion: Death and Rebirth (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン DEATH & REBIRTH Shin seiki Evangerion Gekijō-ban: Shito shinsei?) is the first movie spin-off of the Neon Genesis Evangelion television show. It consists of two parts, Death and Rebirth, respectively. The first part, Death, consists of a 60 minute edit of the first 24 episodes of television show, including several new scenes. The second part, Rebirth, consists of an entirely new animation and storyline, following episode 24. Due to time constraints, this new animation wasn't fully completed when the movie was released: only the first 27 minutes out of the total 40 minutes were shown in Rebirth. 4 months later, The End of Evangelion, the second Evangelion movie, featured the complete Rebirth animation, named as Episode 25' : Air.

It was released, along with the follow-up, The End of Evangelion, in response to the success of the TV series, and also of a strong demand of the fans for another ending. It has since been re-edited and rereleased several times.

[edit] Death

Death is 60-minute re-edit of the first 24 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. New scenes were added to the film, which were eventually added in to the television show itself in the "Director's Cut". The purpose of Death is to set up Rebirth, which is a remake of the final two episodes of the television series (episodes 25 and 26).

Death was re-edited twice. Once as Death(true), which removed the new scenes after they were added into the television show and was shown without Rebirth. It was re-edited for the final time with Death(true)2, which added the image of Adam on Gendo's hand and had a few small cuts. Death(true)2 was the cut attached to Revival of Evangelion, the final edit of the Evangelion movies.

[edit] Rebirth

Rebirth is the first part of The End of Evangelion a remake / postmodern sequel to the television series. Originally the entire movie was supposed to be shown as a whole, a la Revival of Evangelion, but production fell behind and so the movie was split into two parts. For more information on The End of Evangelion, see its own article.

[edit] Death and Rebirth / The End of Evangelion

On July 26, 2005 a two disc set with both movies was released by Manga Entertainment Inc. in the United States.
