Dark Portal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dark Portal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article refers to the Warcraft artifact. For the book by Robin Jarvis, see The Dark Portal

The Dark Portal is an artifact in the fictional Warcraft universe. It was constructed by the possessed Medivh and the warlocks of the Shadow Council to be used by the Orc race to transport their invading army from their home world of Draenor (Outland) into the World of Azeroth. It also serves as the background (seen from the Draenor side) of the main screen in World of Warcraft. It shows a swirling vortex from "our world" into the world of Azeroth.

[edit] Location

Among the red rocks of the Blasted Lands, a giant crater sinks below the scorched landscape. Here the Dark Portal, segue to another dimension, stands guarded by demon forces who wish it to remain intact for their master's use. Because it is a bridge between two worlds, the Dark Portal is located in both on the continent of Azeroth and on the Hellfire Peninsula in Draenor. Although unusable in the first edition of World of Warcraft, the land of Draenor is going to be accessible through the Dark Portal in the new expansion, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade some time around January 2007. The world of Draenor, having been torn asunder by the actions of the Shaman Ner'Zhul, is now known as Outland and exists as large continents of land floating in the space of the Twisting Nether.

[edit] History

The Dark Portal was first opened by the wizard Medivh to bring the orcish horde into the world. Manipulating the warlock Gul'dan, Medivh and Gul'dan opened a rift in the dimensions and created a swirling vortex that transports any who enter to either Draenor or Azeroth. The original Orcish Horde, then under the bloodlust given to them by the demonic Burning Legion, used this portal with devastating effectiveness to invade Azeroth. The Dark Portal's first incarnation was destroyed by the wizard Khadgar at the end of the Second War but the Shaman Ner'Zhul succeeded in reopening the Portal shortly after. A band of Alliance forces led by Khadgar managed to seal the Portal from the Draenor side several months later. Today, the Dark Portal stands silently in the Blasted Lands. It is rumored that there is a incantation within one of Medivh's spellbooks that will open the Dark Portal once more.
